Alibaba smashes its sales record on Single’s Day, despite concerns of slowing growth | TechCrunch  On the business side of things, GMV, the metric to measure the total value of merchandise sold across Alibaba’s online stores, hit $14.3 billion last year. That figure was beaten in Chinese Yuan before 3:30 pm, while the U.S. Dollar metric was beaten before 8:00 pm when GMV reached $14.69 billion, or RMB 100 million.:

This year 11.11. 2016 Alibaba marked Single’s Day — the planet biggest online shopping event — with a splashy four-hour show in Shenzhen which include appearances from Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson, ex-England footballer David Beckham, retired NBA player Kobe Bryant, and live music from OneRepublic. Company founder Jack Ma even presented a magic trick on stage.

Shoppers have spent $9.3 billion in the first 12 hours of Alibaba’s Singles’ Day, the one-day extravaganza in China that has become the world’s biggest day of shopping. It’s already the world’s biggest shopping day.

The Chinese e-commerce giant has already surpassed last year’s record of $9 billion for the Nov. 11 shopping day in half the time,
